As I write this, we’re living in the middle of a major Covid-19 pandemic, we might be in the midst of a catastrophic war with Russia, and the effects of climate change will become irreversible in a little over 7 years. When I reread The City of Ember as an adult, I wonder if the formation of an underground, post-apocalyptic city, like Ember, will become a reality during my lifetime. When I read “The City of Ember” as a child, I thought of it as a cool concept for a dystopian novel. This inspires Lina and her friend Doon to set off and try to piece together the instructions of the original message in order to save Ember’s citizens from Ember’s inevitable demise. ![]() ![]() Ember is now 241 years old, the city’s supplies are running low, and the power seems to be running out. The message on the paper is typed up which leads Lina to believe that it was a message from the original builders of Ember – as nobody in Ember can type. Lina finds the paper and tries to piece it back together. ![]() Lina’s little sister Poppy finds the box, but (thinking it’s a toy), tears up the paper inside. As such, the box is hidden somewhere in the Mayfleet household. The 7th mayor ends up being Lina’s great-great-grandfather. Ember’s 7th mayor, however, stole the box and died before he could return it to the next mayor. Inside Ember lies a box with instructions on how to escape Ember and return above ground once the city’s 200 year lifespan is up. Ember was built as a post-apocalyptic city with enough resources for its residents to survive for about 200 years. The story follows a girl by the name of Lina Mayfleet who lives in an underground city, Ember, with her grandmother and little sister. Rats the size of houses, and rocks as sharp as knives.The “City of Ember” is a novel that was published in 2003 by Jeanne DuPrau. What does Sadge Merrall say is in the Unknown Regions? She bought the colored pencils from Looper, the guy who sent a message to the mayor the very first day of Lina’s job as a messenger.ġ5. Why don’t the colored pencils bring Lina happiness? They don’t because she was so focused on the pencils that she forgot about Poppy and she had wandered away without Lina noticing.ġ4. How does Lna find Poppy? Doon had found her earlier and Lina was asking if anyone had seen her and Doon saw and gave her Poppy.ġ3. Why does Lina have trouble finding Poppy after she wanders away from the store? She has trouble because after she wandered away, there was a very long blackout and she couldn’t see anything.ġ2. Why does Clary give Lina a bean seed? She gave it to her so she could grow it and maybe find a clue in it about answers somewhere outside of Ember.ġ1. ![]() Why does Sadge come to the greenhouse in a state of panic? She worries because the city needs more things collected by them because they’re running out of supplies.Ĩ. The information might be the long-lost instructions for the people in the city of ember.ħ. She asked because grandma forgets a lot, and she just wants her to make sure that everything is alright.Ħ. It’s important because he wanted his dad to be proud of him. What kind of talent is Doon particularly proud of? He was proud of his mechanical talent.Ĥ. It’s disappointing because he thought just by looking at it, he could figure out how it works, but it was about 2 stories high and just a big, vibrating thing.ģ.
